It's that time of the month again and I've been feeling the symptoms in the past few days. As much as I try not to be bugged down by them, they crept up on me like they usually do. Yep, if you're a woman or someone who lives with a woman, you know what I'm talking about. No matter how normal or smooth your life might be, the days leading to one's mestrual period can be such a b*tch. Ah... the dreaded PMS. What is it really? How can a good natured and happy woman turn into a nightmare of a witch once this monthly guest turn up? 
As I get older, it seems like these symptoms are getting worse and more bothersome. I truly pity my husband who has to deal with a wife whose mood shifts rival those of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. Well, it's a bit of a stretch but you get the idea. 
I'm sure most of you out there can relate to this so I thought I'll dedicate this post on this thorny subject. 
As defined by most literature, Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is the name of a group of symptoms that start 7 to 14 days before your period (menstruation). The symptoms usually stop soon after your period begins. Your symptoms may be worse some months and better others. About 150 separate symptoms have been documented, but it is unlikely that any one woman will have all of them. Here are some of the common ones.
What causes PMS? No one knows for sure. But PMS seems to be linked in part to changes in hormone levels during the menstrual cycle. PMS is not caused by stress or psychological problems, though these may make the symptoms of PMS worse. There is no cure for PMS, but eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly and taking medicine may help. Your doctor will talk to you about whether you need to change your diet and exercise habits. He or she may also prescribe medicine for you, depending on what your symptoms are.
Is there anything one can do to ease the symptoms? Yes. See the box below for some tips. Know what your PMS symptoms are and when they happen. Then you can change your diet, exercise and schedule to get through each month as smoothly as possible.
I exhibit most of the usual physical symptoms such as feeling bloated, breast tenderness and difficulty sleeping. For premenstrual cramps, I start taking Aleve hours before the onset of my period and pretty much every 8 hours after as needed. I can deal with the physical changes but the shifts in mood are the ones that I really struggle with. Depression, irritability, anger, tearfulness and increased emotional reactivity are just some of them. I've just recently learned to identify and understand them. Self-knowledge is the key. One has to be able to accept and adjust to her monthly changes in energy and mood. Although parts of the experience are unpleasant, I've discovered that it helps to view things from a different perspective. 
A supportive spouse is also a great help during low energy days or periods of irritability. I make it a point to warn Kenny when those days are approaching so he can better prepare for the onslaught of the "storm". I ask for his patience, patience and more patience. He's getting better at it but I really have to make a concerted effort to reel in the negative emotions. I just can't hide behind the excuse of " 
I'm PMSing. I can't help being this way."

Ladies, thank you for your very interesting and informative responses. I guess it's reassuring to know that we are not alone in our womanly predicament every month. Someone somewhere out there is feeling the same way we do, probably worse at times. I totally agree on the importance of having someone who understands and accepts that we need their support and nurturing when we hit a rough patch. I guess this is the price they pay for choosing to live with a woman
